Assistants can also provide reminders for medications to be taken late in the evening or early in the morning and make sure the seniors are comfortable.

March 12, 2012, Norwalk, CT – Several Stamford elementary school classrooms will be seeing some unique vests appearing over the next few weeks. Weighted vests and lap pads are being incorporated into classrooms for children who have a variety of sensory processing disorders. Karen Bassett, a student in the entry-level Master’s Degree Program in Occupational Therapy (OT) at Sacred Hearst University (SHU) began working in the Stamford schools in January 2012 as part of her fieldwork studies. Karen saw the need for this type of intervention tool when she witnessed the limited availability of vests to try with students.

Weighted vests are often used as part of an Occupational Therapy plan for children with a variety of diagnoses including sensory processing disorder, autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit disorder. The concept is based on providing deep pressure input through wearing the weighted vests for different times during the day and that this input can help a child focus and pay attention to activities in class. These vests typically retail between $50 and $100.

Bassett shared her idea to create weighted vests and lap pads (lap pads are utilized in similar ways while the child is seated) with her OT Supervisor in Stamford Adriana Jaramillo, OTR/L of Constellation School Based Therapy. She then proposed her idea to the Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) at SHU for funding as a community service project. Once Bassett was granted approval of the project, the project has taken a life of its own: you can find Karen and eight of her fellow entry level OT students in SHU’s OT Department at their 4 sewing machines cutting, stitching and creating hand-crafted weighted vests and lap pads in multiple sizes and colors.

Assistant Director of Constellation School-Based Therapy Joanne Drouillard, OTR/L expressed her admiration for Bassett’s “take-charge” nature, “Karen has really orchestrated something remarkable. She brought the need to our attention and within weeks we see the finished product of determination and collaboration.”

When asked about why Bassett has gone through such tremendous efforts to making this a successful project, she stated, “it really came full circle for me when I think back to how helpful this type of intervention could have been for my own son in kindergarten and first grade. If it helps just one child function more successfully during his/her school day, then it’s a great step forward.”

If you or someone you love has ever needed the services provided by a home health agency, you are aware choosing the right provider can be a daunting task. Selecting a state-licensed, reputable agency with caring and professional staff requires considerable time and attention. The first step after finding a credible agency is to schedule an initial, confidential meeting to ask about what services they provide and answer any questions you may have. Inquire as to how they evaluate and screen their employees. Do they place emphasis on customer service and supplying customized services and quality staff? If you invest the time in researching and selecting an agency, you ultimately find a home health agency that fulfills, or hopefully exceeds, your expectations.

Quality private duty agencies understand the importance of customizing services to the individual needs of their patients. This includes assuring that both caregiver and client have a chance to get to know one another before beginning services. During an initial nursing assessment, the certified care assistant, companion or homemaker is introduced to the client for an opportunity to decide if it’s a good fit. The caregiver will be provided with information regarding the client’s health, what help the client needs, as well as client preferences like favorite meals and activities. The caregiver will log when they saw the client and what services were rendered. A nurse will oversee the client’s care by reviewing the records on a regular basis and making supervisory visits when needed to ensure quality of care. Most important is that the client and caregiver establish a level of trust and understanding.

The aging process in adults typically results in a physical decline. Aging adults can develop chronic conditions like arthritis or become they may become frail and have trouble managing self-care. It’s not uncommon that seniors can become agitated and resist help if the question is raised whether they need care with daily activities like bathing or dressing.

Trained and certified care assistants can help seniors maintain proper hygiene. They will keep the seniors on their usual bathing schedule and can ensure safety like placing a shower chair in the tub if necessary. Certified care assistants will check the temperature of the water to make sure it is comfortable for the seniors and stay close by in case immediate assistance is needed. In instances where the senior the aides will sponge bathe clients who have physical limitations. Having the aides nearby helps seniors feel more comfortable and secure about the process.
